An opportunity to develop tools for understanding and manipulating musical fundamentals. Exploration and discussion of musical parameters in various different musical styles. By delving into an array of world percussion styles, this course offers students the fundamental skills and techniques of percussion. MUSC 103 (1) Basic Musicianship I

A continuation of Explorations in Music I, students will be guided through music's fundamental principles through hands-on activities. An introduction to computers as they are used in music. The focus is on learning software that aids in traditional musical pursuits: scoring, ear training, and burning CDs for private lesson accompaniment, compositional or other purposes. (2:0:0)

MUSC 125 (3) Music Notation and Score Preparation (Effective Sep 2024)
Music notation and score preparation using digital notation software. Through a series of assignments, students will develop fluency using music notation tools. Students will study standard notation practices recognized by professional performing organizations and music librarians. (3:0:0)

MUSC 130 (3) A Vehicle to Spirituality
Designed to examine the links between music, spirituality, and the human condition through an exploration of culture, religion, philosophy, and social constructs. Although students will be participating in various creative endeavours, no prior musical knowledge is required. (3:0:0)

This course is an exploration of the influence of the colourful, idiosyncratic and visionary music producers through popular music and the fascinatingly crucial role they have played in shaping the way we hear pop music today societally and culturally. (3:0:0)

MUSC 131 (3) Music Appreciation: Music of the Recorded Age (Effective Sep 2023)
A consideration of the history and cultural significance of recording and broadcast technologies. Through listening and focused readings, students will consider influential musicians and producers. MUSC 132 (3) Music Appreciation: Ways of Listening
Through guided listening and reading, students will engage with diverse genres and consider music from social, cultural, cognitive, technological, and historical perspectives. Students are encouraged to appreciate and discuss numerous musical forms, periods, and cultures, and to integrate knowledge of music into their own interests and perspectives. (3:0:0)

MUSC 133 (3) Language of Music I
The first in a four-course sequence, the "Language of Music" delves into melody-writing techniques, growing out of the study of counterpoint. By the end of the course, students will be able to "harmonize," i.e., compose original melodic lines to pre-existing melodies and realize a simple diatonic harmonic progression. MUSC 134 (3) Language of Music II
The second in a four-course sequence, the "Language of Music II", delves into a study of complex diatonic harmony with analysis. By the end of the course, students will be able to harmonize a figured bass, realize a lead sheet, and prepare a harmonic reduction and analysis of diatonic compositions. MUSC 134 was formerly called MUSC 101; credit will not be granted for both courses. (3:0:0)

MUSC 135 (1.5) Musicianship I
This is the first of a four-course sequence focusing on aural recognition, diatonic relative pitch, rhythmic performance, and sight singing. Students will apply theoretical models for music making. This ear training class develops students' aural perception of the theory learned in "Language of Music I" which is taught concurrently. MUSC 136 (1.5) Musicianship II
This is the second of a four-course sequence and further develops skills learned in "Musicianship I". The focus is on major and minor based melodies with larger intervallic skips. Rhythms are explored primarily through syncopated eighth notes, triplets (swing subdivision), and sixteenth notes using simple and compound meters. MUSC 217 (3) History of Jazz
Jazz is considered through musical, cultural, gendered, socio-economic, and technological perspectives. Students develop active and critical listening skills, a precise awareness of chronology and attribution, and understanding of the powerful role of jazz in the political and social phenomena of the 20th century. MUSC 220 (3) History of Film Music
An overview of the major stylistic trends and musical influences that led to the development of film scoring as an art form. We will discuss and analyze scores of significant composers, ranging from the romantic/operatic tradition to other popular styles such as jazz, rock, and recent trends including electronic/synthesized scores. MUSC 225 (3) Introduction to Home Recording
An introduction to home recording, production, and music creation. Students will learn fundamental skills to compose, record, and produce music in a home studio. Emphasis will be placed on learning the essential hardware and software that make up a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). (3:0:0)

MUSC 233 (3) Language of Music III
A comprehensive view of the languages of music. Students continue the study of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic music theory with regards to form, harmonic analysis, chord spelling, scales, voice leading, and composition. MUSC 234 (3) Language of Music IV
Students will continue the study of melody, harmony, and rhythm in multiple genres with an emphasis on complex forms, chromatic harmony, chord spelling, chord/scale relationships, symmetrical scales, and polyrhythms. Through exercises in composition and analysis, informed by professional performance practices, students will understand relationships between melody, harmony, and rhythm. MUSC 235 (1.5) Musicianship III
The third of a four-course sequence which further develops skills learned in "Musicianship II". This course enhances students' aural perception of intervals, pitches, chords, chord progressions, melodies, and rhythms, focusing on minor and secondary dominant melodies. Students will explore sixteenth note syncopated rhythms and additive meters. MUSC 235 was formerly called MUSC 107; credit will not be granted for both courses. (2:0:0)

MUSC 236 (1.5) Musicianship IV
This is the culmination of the Musicianship course sequence. Upon successful completion, students will have developed a thorough aural perception and understanding of the language necessary for professional musicianship. Melodic dictation and sight-singing emphasizes chromatic and atonal melodies, mixed meters, and odd time signatures. MUSC 459 (3) Choral and Instrumental Conducting
This course is designed for students intending to be music teachers and/or music directors. Students will learn about conducting choral and instrumental ensembles, the pedagogy of teaching conducting, and choosing repertoire for choral and instrumental ensembles. MUSC 463 (1) Wind Ensemble VII

MUSC 481 (2) Jazz Arranging, Aural Skills and Composition III
Introduction to jazz composition involving study and analysis of major composers. Focuses on techniques for creating and developing melody, studying rhythm, form, and style. Continues aural skills studies. Students will write, compose, and arrange pieces played by an ensemble which may be used to fulfill requirements of the Applied Performance Project. MUSC 482 (2) Jazz Arranging, Aural Skills and Composition IV
Students will compose and arrange several pieces that will be played by an ensemble which may be used to fulfill some of the requirements of the Applied Performance Project. Compositions may be written entirely for one type of ensemble, for example, Big Band, or a variety of ensembles. MUSC 482 was formerly called MUSC 448; credit will not be granted for both courses. MUSC 483 (1) Jazz Workshop and Repertoire V
A continuation of MUSC 283/284 and 383/384. Topics include professors working with students in small groups in a seminar/lab setting focusing on instruction about, and rehearsal and performance of, jazz repertoire at an advanced level appropriate to the fourth year of a performance degree. (0:2:1)

MUSC 484 (1) Jazz Workshop and Repertoire VI

An independent project undertaken by a student in consultation with a faculty member. Requires approval of the Department Chair. Could result in a performance, a recording, or a project in another form. This course may be taken up to three times for credit on distinct projects. (0:3:0)
